Prednisone is a corticosteroid which suppress the immune system and helps in reduction of release of those compounds in body which causes inflammation. Prednisone is anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant medicine. Usually its available in the form of a 1, 2, 5 and 20mg tablet.

Usually 5 mg daily dose is the physiologic dose for adults. But in some cases Prednisone 20mg can also be recommended. Never decide you dose on your own. Stick to the dosage told by doctor.

Prednisone is used to treat following medical conditions:

  • skin conditions
  • ulcerative colitis
  • arthritis
  • lupus
  • psoriasis
  • breathing disorders


Prednisone 20 mg Side Effects


Prednisone is an Asteroid and its the basic side effect of steroids that them weaken our immune system and make our body prone to catching infection. Some common side effects of Prednisone are

  • shortness of breath
  • vision problems
  • severe pain in your upper stomach
  • severe depression
  • bloody or tarry stools
  • eye pain
  • changes in personality or behavior
  • slow wound healing
  • sleep problems (insomnia)


Long Term Usage Side Effects of Prednisone



  • It can cause bone-loss (osteoporosis), especially if you smoke while taking Prednisone. Its necessary to take have diet rich in Vitamin D and Calcium to protect yourself from this side effect.
  • It can cause thinning of skin and easy bruising.
  • Sometimes it causes changes in the shape or location of body fat in your face, neck, back, and waist. It can also increase acne or facial hair
  • Prednisone long-term usage can also cause menstrual problems, impotence, or loss of interest in sex.


Precautions to be used  while taking Prednisone



  • Never stop taking Prednisone suddenly. Its dose should be reduced gradually as per the advice of a doctor.
  • Never use Prednisone if you are suffering from any type of fungal infection.
  • Prednisone can worsen the condition if you are already suffering from any infection or recovered from an infection in past few weeks. So if your doctor is prescribing Prednisone then he/she might ask you about your medical condition in past few weeks.
  • Usually Prednisone is not prescribed from pregnant women, as it can affect the growth of unborn baby.
  • Prednisone can cause some medical test results to be unusual.
  • Try to keep yourself away from sick people as you are more prone to diseases (Prednisone is an immuno-suppresant).
  • Prednisone should be taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset.


Prednisone Overdose


Prednisone overdose does not cause any life-threatening condition. However these are some side-effects of long term usage which are discussed above. If you forget to take a dose then take it as soon as you remember, but if its almost time for your next dose then leave it. Never double your dose to makeup for a missed dose.
