How does Moon affect the functions of Human Body

Post a Comment
If you have seen old Hollywood movies involving vampires then you must have seen effect of Sun and Moon on these creatures. Moon is famous for changing people from normal human to a wolf in such movies. But in real world such things don't happen. But ! Moon affect our bodies and lives more than we think it does.

Tides are caused due to moon

The gravitational pull of moon causes water level to rise. However the Sun is much larger than Moon, but still the tidal forces of Moon are twice strong than Sun. Tides caused in ocean submerge coastal areas under water and then water level goes down as the moon passes by. Full moon , New Moon and other phases of moon have no effect on tides, because tides happen due to moon, not due to its visible shape. Even on a new moon, when moon is invisible, tides happen as usual.
Tides are something which can be easily understood by a scientific brain, but there are somethings which are a bit mysterious.

Menstrual Cycle of Women

Most of us consider menstrual cycle as one month long, but there are 13 cycles in a year instead of 12. It is because menstrual cycle corresponds to Lunar Month, not the solar month of Gregorian calendar which is followed around the world. Usually lunar month is of 28 days, which is same as menstrual month. It means that hormonal cycle inside women is connected to moon. It can't be a coincidence. If moon can cause tides in ocean, then somehow it may also affect our internal biology. Some researchers believe that in ancient time those women who slept in groups ovulated at full moon and menstruated at new moon.

Moon being nearest celestial object affect our bodies more than we think it can. Our evolution was affected by presence of moon. Moon always remain around us in the same shape and size, but its visible portion changes over time and causes full moon and new moon.

Are lunar months designed according to its visible phases or its revolution around earth ?
Lunar months are designed according to both its visibility and revolution period around the earth. Both visible lunar phases and revolution around earth takes around 28 days. Here some of us may argue that moon passes by them every day, so it must be completing one revolution around earth in a day. If you are one of them then you should know that earth also rotates on its axis and it completes one rotation in 24 hours (approx). When we compare moons location with some relatively distant fixed stars, we find that moon takes 27 days, 7 hours, and 43 minutes to complete one orbit around earth. It is the generous behavior of Earth that it let the moon enlighten every place on earth almost every night due to its own rotation. One complete cycle of phases, from one new moon to next new moon, takes around 29.5 days. So when we talk about lunar month, then it is an average of both.

Lunatic: Does moon make us Mad
Mad people are often termed as lunatic. But does moon really have some impact on our behavior. It is a matter of research. Some people believe that just like moon causes high tides in ocean, similarly it affects the water inside our body and changes our behavior. Scientists don't believe this fact. Their logic is sufficient enough , behind why mad behavior occurs more often during full moon. According to scientists, full moon provides enough light for people to arrange gatherings on such nights. Even if madness events remain in the same proportion, more gatherings will result in more madness events. Hence lunatic behavior due to moon can't be explained by science.
Another explain is that gravitational pull on a contained water body is negligible as the size of that water body decreases. A lake does not rise due to gravitational pull of moon. It is because tidal forces can act on very large bodies like ocean. Human body is a very smaller object, so gravitational pull of moon can't affect our brain water. Even if we believe that it does, then it should affect us at least once a day, not once a month, as same sized moon passes by us every day. The only difference in daily sighting of moon is its visible surface. The actual size and gravity of moon remain same every day.

Some historians believe that moon changed the behavior of people during ancient times as there was no artificial light at that time. Moon light might have disturbed their sleep time, as more light keeps us aware of surroundings and we can't sleep properly. Full moon might have disturbed their sleep and changed their behavior the very next day, and people called them lunatic.
It is not just humans, moon light changes animal behavior as well. Lion usually hunt during night, but not on a full moon, as moon light keeps the prey aware and makes it harder to catch them. To make up that loss, lion often hunt on the day following the full moon night.
Modern electric lighting and fully covered houses might have saved humans from lunatic behavior but still we are connected to that old theory and call people lunatic for mad behavior.

Do you know that some spiritual gurus believe that average human lifespan in 1008 lunar months.

Everybody can't be convinced to believe that moon really affect humans, but those who believe will definitely understand the above facts. We might not believe that stars and others planets affect our lives, but Sun and Moon are closest relatives of Earth, and there would have been no life if these two celestial objects were not there.
