Pregnancy and Blood Pressure

Blood Pressure variations often occur during pregnancy. Here we will try to put some light on the reasons behind it. Both High or Low Blood Pressure can happen during pregnancy. We will discuss the reasons behind both of these conditions.

High Blood Pressure during Pregnancy

High Blood Pressure is a condition when your blood pressure reading goes above 140/90. Several factors can cause high blood pressure. We have provided a list of reasons behind High Blood Pressure during Pregnancy.

  • Getting pregnant after 40 Years of Age.

Our lifestyle has a lot to do with high blood pressure. Being Obese, being a smoker and being a drinker is self invitation to high BP.  Being Obese or being Inactive are also related to each other and both of them are also bad for a pregnant woman. These factors can be controlled by adopting a healthy lifestyle. However some factors are unavoidable such as getting pregnant after age of 40 Years, or having a family history of hypertension or kidney diseases. Sometimes carrying twins can also become a reason behind High BP. So if the reason behind high BP is one of last 3 reasons then its better to consult a good gynecologist.

Low Blood Pressure during Pregnancy

Low Blood Pressure during pregnancy is also a common phenomena. Usually this condition is at its peak in the middle of second trimester. During low BP a pregnant women may feel lightheadedness, dizziness and even fainting. Some women feel sudden lowering of BP while standing up or rising up from bed.

Reasons behind Low Blood Pressure during Pregnancy

  • Expansion of circulatory System: As the circulatory system of baby develops inside the womb, the body fluids are shared between mother and child which leads to low BP.
  • Hormonal Changes: Some Hormonal changes dilate the blood to make it easier to flow. It can also cause low blood pressure.

A Few lifestyle changed should be done by pregnant women to deal with Low BP conditions. here are a few tips:

  • Just sit down or lie down if you are feeling that you are about to faint. It will save you from falling and also also save you from harming the baby and yourself.
  • Lying on the left side will increase blood flow to the heart and save you from low BP condition.
  • Don't be fast while standing up from a seated or lying position.

Note: If you feel that your condition is getting worst, then don't hesitate in contacting your gynecologist. Don't try to be a doctor yourself.

Egg Freezing Cost and Success Rates

In 1986 first baby was born with the help of Egg Freezing. Success rates were very low at that time. Israel National Bioethics Council (INBC) permitted egg freezing in December 2009 to prevent disease and age related fertility decline.

What is Egg Freezing ?

In the process of egg freezing, some hormones are injected into women for two weeks, and then doctor retrieves the mature egg cells from ovary with the help of a needle. These egg cells are frozen for use in future. The unique thing about this technology is that its practiced on healthy fertile women. After several years when the women want to be pregnant, the eggs are thawed, injected with a single sperm to fertilize it, and then transferred into the uterus as embryos.

Who should use Egg Freezing

  • Egg Freezing is used as an insurance against age related infertility. Those who want babies after entering 40's but fearing infertility at that time, may use this technology to store the female egg cells when she is in 30's .
  • Egg freezing has given a chance to those women who are diagnosed positive for cancer and want to preserve eggs prior to chemotherapy, surgery or radiation. It gives them a chance to retrieve the healthy egg cell again in future and use it for a better pregnancy.

Egg Freezing Cost

The cost of egg freezing consists of three types of expenditures. First is retrieval of egg cells. It costs $10000 to $17000 per cycle. Some women may need to go through it twice to collect enough number of eggs. Second expenditure is in storage. It may cost upto $3000 for five years. Final expenditure on making these egg cells usable again costs from $3400 to $6800. All these expenditure are currently not covered under any type of Insurance Policy.

Egg freezing Success Rate

Out of every 10 frozen eggs only 5 to 6 result into successful fertilization and becoming embryos. So doctors suggest to freeze at least 10 egg cells for a successful pregnancy in future. Maximum storage time for egg cells in frozen state successfully practiced till now is 10 years. Researches have shown that the egg quality and embryo quality after its fertilization is not decreased due to this time period. This storage time is expected to increase in future.

Egg freezing is becoming a market that is stratified, globalized, and part of a larger bioeconomy. The potential merits and demerits of egg freezing and its possible social and legal consequences are yet to be researched.
